Best Time to Visit Ölüdeniz for Paragliding

Discover the ideal seasons and weather conditions for an unforgettable paragliding experience in Ölüdeniz.

Ölüdeniz is open for paragliding almost year-round, but not all days - or even all hours - are created equal. If you want the smoothest flight, the clearest skies, and the best possible photos, here's what you need to know about timing your tandem paragliding experience at Babadağ.

The Best Months to Fly

April to October is the main paragliding season in Ölüdeniz. During this window, the weather is reliably warm, the skies are predominantly clear, and the famous Ölüdeniz thermals are at their most consistent.

Peak season (June–August) offers the hottest weather and the most flying days, but the site gets busy. If you're visiting in summer, book your flight in advance.

Shoulder season (April–May and September–October) is arguably the best time to visit. The weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and the quality of light - golden and warm - makes for stunning photographs and video.

Winter flying is possible on good days, and some experienced pilots prefer the crisp, clear winter air. However, the weather is more unpredictable, and you should check conditions carefully before booking.

Morning vs. Afternoon

The honest answer is: the best time to fly depends entirely on what kind of experience you're after.

Morning flights (8:00–11:00) are generally smoother. As the sun rises slowly and the valley below begins to wake up, the air is calm and serene - you glide through the quiet before the thermals build. It's a gentle, peaceful experience, and ideal if you're nervous or prone to motion sickness.

Midday and afternoon flights (11:00–16:00) are more dynamic. The sun has warmed the ground and thermals are active, giving pilots more lift and longer flight times - you can expect flights of around 30–35 minutes, and by riding the thermic winds along the slopes of Babadağ, some pilots gain enough altitude to extend that by another 10–15 minutes. This is when expert pilots often prefer to fly, and when the most dramatic photos are taken.

Late afternoon flights can be spectacular. At around 2,000 metres above the valley, watching the sun sink below the horizon while Ölüdeniz spreads out beneath you is something you don't forget easily. To your right lies the Fethiye cityscape, ahead the bays and islands of Göcek, to your left Kıdrak Beach and Kabak Cove, and directly below the white sweep of Belcekız Beach and the famous Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon. Depending on the time of year, pilots may need to land before the light fades completely, so check availability.

What Weather Conditions Do Pilots Look For?

Paragliding is highly weather-dependent. At Dragon Paragliding, our pilots monitor conditions on the mountain throughout the day and will only fly when it is safe to do so. Here's what they look for:

  • Wind speed and direction: Light to moderate winds from a consistent direction are ideal. Strong or gusty winds can cause cancellation of the flights.
  • Visibility: Clear skies or light cloud are fine. Thick cloud, fog, or rain make flying impossible and unsafe.
  • Thermals: Experienced pilots use thermals (columns of rising warm air) to stay aloft longer. Too few thermals and flights are short; too many and conditions become turbulent.
  • Temperature gradient: A stable temperature difference between the valley and the summit creates reliable, predictable flying conditions.

What Happens If My Flight Is Cancelled?

If conditions are not safe, your flight will be postponed or rescheduled. At Dragon Paragliding, safety always comes first. If we cancel due to weather, we will reschedule your flight at the next available opportunity at no extra charge. If you cannot rearrange your visit, we provide a full refund.

Tips for Getting the Best Experience

  1. Book early in your stay - this gives you more flexibility if the weather changes.
  2. Stay flexible - if possible, build a day or two of buffer into your schedule so you can reschedule if needed.
  3. Trust your pilot - if a pilot says conditions are not ideal, they mean it. No pilot wants to miss a flying day unnecessarily.
